Qualified supervising driver

If you have a learner’s permit, a qualified supervising driver must be sitting next to you whenever you drive.

This can be a qualified driving instructor, or a family member or friend who:

  • has a current full driver's licence with no conditions, and
  • has not been disqualified from driving in the last 2 years.

A qualified supervising driver will:

  • show you how to operate your car
  • help you understand the road rules
  • check your progress and give you advice
  • sign your learner driver logbook every time you drive.

Find out how you can help family, friends and other people in your community to become good, safe and confident drivers.

Teach em Right is a workshop that can help fully licensed drivers become great Qualified Supervising Drivers.

A Qualified Supervising Driver (QSD) can help Learner Drivers practise driving and learn good skills.

  • If either of you feel tired or stressed, postpone the lesson. Too much stress during your driving sessions is not good. You'll both perform better if you have a relaxed, friendly experience. If necessary, take over the driving task.
