L plates

One of the conditions of a learner's permit is that you have L plates on your car every time you drive. Your L plates let other drivers know that you're learning to drive. It lets them know they should be patient and understanding if you make mistakes.

L plates must show a black L printed on a yellow background. The size must be as shown below.

L plates must be placed so that they can be easily seen at the front and back of your car. You can get a fine and demerit points if you don’t have your L plates in the right place.

  • Always have your L plates clearly displayed at the front and rear - without obstructing the learner's or supervisor's view. This will help other drivers know you’re inexperienced and give you extra time and room to do things.L plates are important. No-one is perfect, and you'll make mistakes. That's why it's called a learner's permit.
  • If you drive with only one L plate or no L plates on your front and rear window, you can receive a fine of up to $375 + $60 Victims of Crime Levy and two demerit points.
  • No L-plates should be displayed on the vehicle when the driver is not a learner driver (except when a licensed driving instructor is driving to or from a lesson).
