Seatbelts

People are much safer travelling in a car if they’re wearing seatbelts.

Wearing seatbelts is the law. If your car has seatbelts (most cars do), you and your passengers must use them.

Always ask your passengers to put on their seatbelts. Explain that it’s safer, and that you could lose your licence and be fined if they don’t.

Remember that if the police stop you, you will be fined if your passengers are not wearing appropriate seatbelts or child restraints.

  • Make sure you and everyone in the car is safely restrained. By not wearing a seatbelt, you can be fined $381 plus a $60 Victims of Crime fee and 3 demerit points. This fine also applies to any passengers not wearing seatbelts.
  • No matter what your age, you must always wear a seatbelt. It's the law.
  • Wearing a seatbelt when travelling at 40km/h is just as important as wearing a seatbelt at faster speeds.
  • The impact of a crash at 40km/h is the same as falling from a two-storey building onto concrete.
