Hahndorf Main Street Improvements

The Department and Mount Barker District Council have been working collaboratively towards a number of improvements for the Main Street that align with the Hahndorf Main Street Revitalisation Plan. The upgrade aims to improve the amenity, safety and experience for the people using the Main Street, supporting Hahndorf to remain a thriving Adelaide Hills community and one of South Australia’s most loved tourism destinations.

This integrated upgrade will be delivered as a part of the Hahndorf Township Improvements and Access Upgrade Project. Mount Barker District Council is also committing funding towards this Main Street upgrade.

The key features of the integrated Main Street design include:

• new street seating, enhanced outdoor dining areas, upgrades to footpaths within high pedestrian zones, footpath extensions, interpretive signage and heritage plaques for buildings;
• planting of new trees and landscaping and new green gateway treatments with trees and plants that reflect the character of Hahndorf. The heritage trees will also be protected;
• an upgrade to a signalised intersection at Balhannah Road and Main Street;
• improved wayfinding signage;
• optimised on-street parking; and
• upgrades to wombat crossing  ramps and additional kerb ramp crossings.

The key benefits of the Main Street improvements include:

• revitalisation of the Main Street supports economic growth and successful places;
• improved amenity and safety of the Main Street for the community, tourists and local businesses;
• improved accessibility and connectivity for local communities and visitors, enhancing the overall Hahndorf township experience;
• enhanced gateways as entrance and exit points to the destination township;
• enhancement and protection of Hahndorf’s existing heritage values and features; and
• improved access and connection towards the township through extending the Pioneer Women’s Trail.

The Department and Mount Barker District Council have paid particular attention to community feedback, and the physical, cultural, and social aspects that define Hahndorf. The concept design will continue to evolve as it progresses into the next phase of detailed design.
