Workzone Traffic Management

Transition to National Training Framework

The training you need to work in a temporary traffic management role changed from 1 February 2024. See the new training framework and find out what you need to do.

Getting permission to carry out roadworks

Before starting roadworks on major arterial roads in South Australia, contractors must first apply to the Traffic Management Centre in writing via our Roadworks Portal. You must also have a current workzone traffic management card to use the portal and submit your traffic plans.

To request access to the portal, contact the Traffic Management Centre via email at dit.roadworks@sa.gov.au or phone on 1800 018 313.

Standards and guidelines

Roadworks should conform to the standards and guidelines outlined in the following documents:

Field guide for traffic control devices

The Traffic Control Devices for Workzone Traffic Management Field Guide (PDF, 3486 KB) is available to help with preparing Workzone Traffic Guidance Plans for use on or adjacent roads within South Australia. The illustrated figures in the guide are examples only and are not intended to cover all instances.

Training and accreditation

All personnel who work on roads must complete workzone traffic management training. Road workers must:

  • be aware of their responsibilities and legal obligations
  • know how and when to use traffic control devices to provide a safe working environment for everyone.

At least one worker must carry a current workzone traffic management accreditation card whenever workers are present at a worksite.

For enquiries, please email DIT.TASSAdminSupport@sa.gov.au.

Prequalification for project delivery

To become prequalified, a company must demonstrate that they have the experience, technical capacity, available resources, and management systems necessary to competently undertake the work.

A company may apply for prequalification in any category at any time.

Prequalification only represents a right to submit a tender or to be considered for a select tender list.
