This page answers some of the most common questions about:

  • workzone traffic management (WZTM) training and courses
  • getting a WZTM card
  • approved training providers.

Workzone traffic management training

Who needs to be trained in workzone traffic management?

The WZTM training course provides training for all workers who are required to work on roads. This ensures that:

  • workers are aware of their responsibilities and legal obligations
  • workers know how and when to use traffic control devices
  • we provide a safe working environment for all.

In South Australia, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport oversees WZTM training.

At least one worker must carry a current WZTM card at all times when workers are present at a worksite.

Do I need training to submit a traffic plan?

To gain access and submit traffic plans to our Roadwork Portal, you must have a current WZTM card. You can get a WZTM card after you have successfully completed WZTM training.

Once you have a WZTM card, fill out the New user application form and submit the form to DIT.Roadworks@sa.gov.au.

After you have successfully registered, you can apply for roadworks permits through the Roadwork Portal.

More information about roadworks permits is available through the Roadwork Portal.

What is covered in the training course?

The WZTM training course is a competency-based course delivered by an approved training provider that provides participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to:

  • identify hazards associated with worksites that require traffic management
  • assess the level of risk to employees and the public
  • control traffic with a Stop/Slow bat
  • plan and implement appropriate traffic management plans.

The course ensures that workers, supervisors and other operational personnel who undertake work on roads and road-related areas within South Australia are aware of their responsibilities and legal obligations.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be issued with:

  • a Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS302E – Implement Traffic Management Plans and RIIWHS205E – Control Traffic With Stop/Slow Bat (issued by the approved training provider)
  • a WZTM card (issued by Department for Infrastructure and Transport).
What are the prerequisites for the course?

How much does the course cost?

The cost of WZTM courses can vary between approved training providers.

  • have current work experience.

If you do not meet all the criteria above, you will need to complete the full TTM course.

Before being issued with a WZTM Traffic Management Card, and have the ability to work in South Australia, you will be required to complete localised content training with an approved training provider.

This course includes the subtle differences in legislation and signage within South Australia.

Do I have to complete a refresher course?
