Conduct management framework

A new conduct management framework for council members in one of the major reforms for South Australia's local government sector.

Behavioural Standards Panel

One of the significant elements of the new council member conduct management framework is the Behavioural Standards Panel.

The Panel deals with complaints about the behaviour of council members that cannot be resolved at the council level - particularly 'repeated' and 'serious' misbehaviour.

Only the council or specific persons from the council will be able to refer matters to the Panel.

The role of the Panel is outlined further under amendments made to the Local Government Act 1999. Further information is available on the Behavioural Standards Panel website.

Panel members

The three Panel members were appointed by the Governor on 17 February 2022.

Behavioural Standards

The Behavioural Standards for Council Members (PDF, 156 KB) formally came into operation with the new council member conduct management framework on 17 November 2022 to coincide with a new term of councils.

The Behavioural Standards have replaced the Code of Conduct for Council Members.
