Mount Barker Interchange Upgrade

The Mount Barker Interchange has experienced 31 crashes between 2016 and 2021. 24 of these crashes involved casualties. Upgrading this interchange will improve capacity, traffic efficiency and commuter safety in the area.

The key features of the proposed Mount Barker Interchange Upgrade include:

  • a new three lane bridge over the South Eastern Freeway for northbound traffic with a dedicated right turn lane for access to the freeway (towards Murray Bridge);
  • conversion of the existing bridge to accommodate three lanes of southbound traffic with a dedicated right turn lane for access to the freeway (towards Adelaide);
  • a new Shared Use Path incorporated onto the existing bridge and approaches, improving connectivity and safety for cyclists and pedestrians; and
  • upgrades to the existing ramps to and from Adelaide to improve safety and capacity.

A new signalised intersection at Adelaide Road and the freeway off ramp from Murray Bridge, improving efficiency, safety, and connectivity for all users needing to cross over Adelaide Road at this point.

In February and March 2022, the proposed concept design for the Mount Barker Interchange Upgrade  was announced and shared with the public via the Department’s website. Approximately 700 surrounding households received a brochure detailing the proposed outcome.
