  • motorcyclists
  • Aboriginal road users
  • road user behaviour
  • road safety in the workplace

Progress against target reductions

During 2024, there was a 24% reduction in lives lost on South Australian roads compared to 2023. Despite this improvement, 89 people still lost their lives in 2024.

Additionally, 809 people were seriously injured in road crashes across the state in 2024.

These crashes have a devastating effect on families, friends, communities and first responders. They serve as a reminder that the work of road safety remains ongoing to improve safety on our roads.

Initiatives and outcomes

The annual report includes progress on legislation, campaigns, enforcement and initiatives to improve road safety. It also highlights the progress against the Safety Performance Indicators.

Some key achievements include:

  • the introduction of mobile phone detection cameras to reduce road trauma caused by driver distraction
  • continued investment in regional road upgrades
  • release of the state’s first Transport Strategy
  • enhancements to the Rider Safe motorbike training program
  • the new SA Police Road Safety Centre, which is leading the way in road safety education.
