South Australia's Public Transport Strategy
We are developing a Public Transport Strategy that will set the vision for public transport in South Australia for the next 30 years. It will provide the direction on how we create a public transport network to meet the needs of South Australia, now and in the future.
Building on what we know
In early 2025, we released South Australia’s first Transport Strategy. We engaged with over 6,000 community members and industry stakeholders to help shape the strategy. This included significant feedback on the existing public transport system.
To develop the Public Transport Strategy, we will build upon what you’ve already told us during consultation for the recently published Transport Strategy. We will engage further on key aspects of public transport so we have a deeper understanding of what’s important to you.
Our Public Transport Strategy will be used to inform planning for public transport initiatives. This ensures we make strategic, informed decisions about what we prioritise and invest in. It will help us deliver a more resilient, reliable and accessible public transport network. As a result, it will boost economic growth and encourage more sustainable ways to travel.
Draft strategic outcomes
Based on what people have already told us, we’ve identified five draft strategic outcomes. These outcomes guide the development of the Public Transport Strategy:
-
A connected South Australia, now and in the future
How do we enhance our public transport network to:
- support population and economic growth
- strengthen connections to our regions
- respond to changing demand and travel patterns?
-
Moving more people, more reliably, more often
How do we make sure our public transport services are fast, efficient and reliable?
-
Liveable and sustainable communities
How do we transition to net-zero emissions and enhance liveability through transport hubs and corridors?
-
Safe and accessible public transport for everyone
How do we provide a positive and safe public transport experience for everyone, regardless of their needs and abilities?
-
A great customer experience
How do we create a public transport system that provides comfort, easy connections and a smooth digital experience?

Why we need this strategy
Our population is growing and we can’t build our way out of road congestion. We need to provide convenient, reliable and attractive transport alternatives to driving.
An additional 670,000 people are expected to be living in our state by 2051. Enhancing our public transport network will be essential to manage congestion and maintain liveability into the future.
Additionally, the South Australia Government has committed to:
- at least 60% reduction in emissions by 2030
- net-zero emissions by 2050.
Increasing use of public transport will help us to achieve those goals.
