Frequently Asked Questions

Project timing

Site investigations and early works have commenced and will continue as part of the detailed design process throughout 2023, with construction expected to commence in late 2024, and completion in early 2026.

Why is this intersection upgrade required?

Marion Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive are major traffic, freight and public transport routes with around 60,000 vehicles passing through the intersection every day.

Currently this intersection is over capacity and becomes very congested. Road users often experience delays travelling in all directions, particularly during the morning and evening peaks. With increasing demand, the current intersection will not cater for future road user demands.

The upgrade will improve traffic flow and safety on these roads, while also improving the reliability and amenity of Sir Donald Bradman Drive as the ‘Gateway to Adelaide’, particularly between Adelaide Airport and the CBD.

This upgrade will:

  • Increase the capacity of the intersection, reducing congestion and improving travel times.
  • Improve safety and network reliability for all road users (private and commercial vehicles, public transport, pedestrians, and cyclists).
  • Improve the reliability and attractiveness of using Sir Donald Bradman Drive particularly between the Adelaide Airport and CBD.
  • Create potential new public open space and stronger integration of pedestrian, cycling and public transport movements within the local area.
Will any vegetation and trees be removed as a result of the project?

There will be some impacts to trees and vegetation as a result of this upgrade however the project team is committed to reducing the impact through the detailed design process as much as possible. Existing vegetation, landscaping and the Boulevard of Honour are all being assessed and carefully considered.

Will the Boulevard of Honour be impacted by the project?

The project team are working closely with the City of West Torrens and interested parties to ensure any impacts are minimised and the boulevard and the people it honours are managed with respect and sensitivity.

Will there be opportunities to enhance the community spaces and landscaping in the area?

Community feedback will play a key role in informing the design of landscaping and the potential new public open spaces around the intersection. This will ensure the upgrade not only addresses the existing issues, but also creates a pleasant and welcoming environment for the community to enjoy.

A landscape and urban design plan will be developed as part of the detailed design process, with further community consultation to occur before the design is finalised.

How will noise from construction and after the project is completed be managed?

As part of the planning and design process, a noise assessment is being undertaken in accordance with the Department’s Road Traffic Noise Guidelines. Results of the assessment will be used to determine what, if any, and where noise mitigation treatments are appropriate.

Please be assured every effort is made by the Department and its construction contractors, to minimise impacts to local residents as much as practically possible.

Is property acquisition required for this project?

The Department wishes to minimise land acquisition and associated impacts on the community as much as practically possible, however a level of land acquisition is required to improve traffic flow and safety on these roads.

Impacted property owners have been contacted directly.
