How the lifting fee works
From 1 October 2017 the State Government started paying a lifting fee of $10 (plus $1 GST) on all eligible trips paid with a 75% or 100% SATSS voucher that are booked through the Suburban Access Taxis CBS.
The lifting fee tariffs will be displayed on the meter as:
- Tariff 5 (weekdays 6am to 7pm); and
- Tariff 6 (other times).
The lifting fee is payment to the driver for helping people in wheelchairs and scooters into and out of the taxi. This only applies to people who have 75% or 100% SATSS vouchers. 50% vouchers are not eligible for the lifting fee.
What to do:
For the driver:
- On dispatching of a booking, the CBS will apply the lifting fee tariff to the journey. Note: The lifting fee cannot be claimed unless a booking is initiated by Suburban Taxis;
- On arrival at the pick-up location, please make contact with the passenger and start the meter when the passenger is ready to leave or at the booked time;
- The meter will pause for up to 7 minutes and 30 seconds before it starts calculating waiting time and running rates; or
- The meter will commence calculating the fare as soon as the car starts moving. This means the fare displayed on the meter may appear to be less than the equivalent fare without the lifting fee because the meter will pause for a while – but drivers will get paid separately for this time by the lifting fee;
- Once arrived at the destination you must turn the meter off before assisting the passenger out of the vehicle, the time taken to assist the passenger to exit the vehicle is paid in the lifting fee. In situations where the meter is not turned off the lifting fee could be withheld and other penalties may apply;
- The passenger MUST NOT be asked to pay the lifting fee or any part of it.
Note: While the meter pauses for up to 7 minutes and 30 seconds, the lifting fee of $10 actually pays for 15 minutes of waiting time. The 15 minutes includes the paused time and the time to assist a passenger to leave the taxi (after the meter is turned off).
For the passenger:
- When you are booking an Access Taxi please let the Suburban Taxis booking service know that you will be paying with a 75% or 100% SATSS voucher;
- Suburban Taxis will also ask you if you are paying with a 75% or 100% SATSS voucher;
- On confirmation, Suburban Taxis will dispatch a vehicle;
- On pick-up, the meter will pause for up to 7 minutes and 30 seconds before it starts calculating the fare. Note: This pause is covered by the lifting fee paid in full by the Government;
- After 7 minutes and 30 seconds or when the car starts moving the meter will commence charging the fare for your journey;
- Once you arrive at your destination, the driver MUST turn off the meter before assisting you out of the vehicle. (Note: the time taken to assist you after the meter is turned off is paid for by the lifting fee);
- You MUST NOT be asked by the driver to pay the lifting fee or any part of it. Should you be asked to pay the fee please report this to Adelaide Metro at their Contact Us page.
Note: If the trip does not attract the lifting fee (for example the passenger is paying themselves) the passenger will be charged the legal maximum fare using the standard tariff 1 (weekdays 6am to 7pm) or tariff 2 (other times).
How to get paid:
SATSS will pay the lifting fee for all eligible trips when it pays for the voucher subsidies.
Lifting fee eligible trips must be booked through the Suburban Taxis CBS. For rank and hail jobs drivers must contact the Suburban Taxis CBS to activate the lifting fee tariff.
The passenger MUST NOT be asked to pay the lifting fee or any part of it.
Write “$11.00” on the voucher under the voucher number at the bottom of the voucher to claim the lifting fee. In the diagram below you can see a blue box, this is where to insert the $11.00 lifting fee. Do NOT add the lifting fee to the total of the fare.
Questions and answers:
Q. If the passenger requests to stop and leave the vehicle during the trip and I wait and leave the meter running can I receive the a second lifting fee for the rest of the trip?
A. No, if the meter is left running - it is only one trip. Only one SATSS voucher can be used and the lifting fee applies only as one trip.
Q. If the passenger requests I provide their return trip will the lifting fee automatically apply?
A. No. If the meter is left running between the original and return trip it will be considered a single trip. A second lifting fee and on time bonus will not apply. If the meter is turned off at the end of the original trip, you will need to contact Suburban Taxis for the lifting fee tariff to be activated for the return trip.
Q. Will I get the lifting fee if I stop the trip part way through and restart the meter?
A. No, a trip is from the pick-up location to the drop-off destination. Once the meter stops you will need to contact Suburban Taxis for the lifting fee tariff to be activated again. The Department will investigate all instances where this occurs to ensure all claims for the lifting fee or on time bonus are legitimate. Penalties may apply to breaches of the Passenger Transport Regulations 2009.
