Upgrades complete along Victor Harbor Road

Friday, 23 May 2025

Two key intersections on Victor Harbor Road have been upgraded to improve road safety in the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Motorists travelling along Victor Harbor Road will now have two additional right turning lanes, one onto Hindmarsh Tiers Road and the other onto Virgin Road, making it safer for drivers turning and driving through the intersection.

To further enhance driving conditions, the intersection has also been resurfaced for smoother drives as well as new guardrail, line marking and LED lighting, improving the overall safety of the intersection.

As part of the Victor Harbor Road and Brookman Road (Old Willunga Hill Road) junction upgrade, the left turning lane has been offset further from Victor Harbor Road to improve visibility for motorists exiting Brookman Road.

The completion of these works follows a strong need for safety improvements as there were six reported crashes at the Victor Harbor Road, Hindmarsh Tiers Road, Virgin Road intersection between 2020 and 2024, resulting in one fatality and two serious injuries.

In that same period, there were eight reported crashes at the Victor Harbor Road and Brookman junction, with one crash causing serious injury.

These intersections on Victor Harbor Road carry a high volume of traffic with around 8500 vehicles travelling through the Victor Harbor Road, Hindmarsh Tiers Road and Virgin Road intersection each day with 1000 of them being heavy vehicles.

Similarly, the Victor Harbor Road and Brookman Road junction sees around 15,600 vehicles pass through it each day, which includes 1800 heavy vehicles.

Not only has this project improved road safety, but it has supported 55 local full-time jobs through South Australian based company, CATCON.

The upgrades are funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (80:20) and form part of the $810 million Fleurieu Connections projects.
