South Eastern Freeway Pavement Rehabilitation: Tollgate to Crafers
About the project
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) is undertaking major pavement rehabilitation works on the South Eastern Freeway between the Glen Osmond Tollgate and the Crafers Interchange. This $35 million project is jointly funded (80:20) by the Australian and South Australian Governments under the South Eastern Freeway Pavement Rehabilitation Stimulus 2.
The works involve removing around 300 millimetres of existing pavement and replacing it with new asphalt. Major asphalting works such as these were last undertaken on this section of the freeway over 20 years ago. These works will ensure the long term safety and integrity of the freeway for all road users.
The works will be undertaken in stages, with a section of one carriageway (either uphill or downhill) closed at a time and vehicles detoured onto the adjacent carriageway.
Works commenced in February 2021 and are expected to be complete by early 2022.
With the current demand of commuter and freight traffic, the section between Crafers and Stirling is heavily impacted during peak periods with increased travel times. South Eastern Freeway Pavement Rehabilitation Works: Crafers to Tollgate
Speeds will be restricted to 60km/h along the South Eastern Freeway for approximately a further four weeks to enable excess bitumen on the new surface to be worn to a safe texture level (this is in relation to the skid resistance of the road surface), weather permitting.
Speeds are also restricted to 60km/h in sections where safety barriers have been temporarily removed to facilitate the pavement rehabilitation works. Works to reinstate the safety barriers will commence in late November 2021 and completed by early December 2021, weather permitting.
Speeds will be progressively reinstated as these works are completed and skid resistance testing finalised.
South Eastern Freeway/Cross Road/Portrush Road/Glen Osmond Road Intersection Pavement Rehabilitation
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) is undertaking major road pavement rehabilitation works on the South Eastern Freeway/ Cross Road/ Portrush Road and Glen Osmond Road intersection and at all approaches to the intersection.
The works involve removing existing pavement and replacing it with new asphalt to ensure the long term safety and integrity of the intersection for all road users.
Commencement of next stage of night works
Major work at the South Eastern Freeway/Cross Road/Portrush Road/Glen Osmond Road Intersection is continuing.
From Sunday, 5 December until mid-December 2021, this work will occur on the southbound lanes of Portrush Road from just south of Glebe Street to the intersection and outbound lanes of the South Eastern Freeway from the intersection to the Glen Osmond Tollgate – as seen in blue (Section 2) in the map below.
Works will be undertaken between hours of 7pm and 6am.
Speed and lanes restrictions with be in place in the vicinity of the works with Glen Osmond and Portrush Roads reduced to a single lane of traffic in each direction during the working hours.
Outside of work hours all lanes will be open to traffic with speed restrictions in place.
Please see the plan for detailed local access arrangements during these works.
Further updates will be provided on the project website and via the Department’s social media.
What to expect – changed traffic conditions
Major works will be undertaken in four separate sections, with activities underway in only one section at a time. Throughout the construction program works will return to each section on around three occasions. See map over the page.
Roads will remain open, with two way traffic maintained at all times and speed restrictions in place. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction through the work zone during work hours. Please expect some delays. Outside of work hours all lanes will be open to traffic with speed restrictions in place.
Access to properties will be maintained throughout the works wherever possible. However, some short-term driveway access restrictions will be required. The project team will contact property owners in advance of any temporary impact to driveways to ensure suitable arrangements are in place.
Major works commenced in February 2021 and are expected to be complete by early 2022.
Please take extra care when workers are on site. Observe signage and speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.
Motorists should expect delays, so please plan ahead and allow additional travel time.
