'Hahndorf Township Strategic Traffic Planning Study' and 'Hahndorf Township Improvements and Access Upgrade Project'

Latest Update

Consultation on the  Mount Barker Interchange Upgrade concept concluded on Thursday, 10 march 2022.

The Australian and South Australian governments have committed $250 million to jointly fund the Hahndorf Township Improvements and Access Upgrade Project.

In 2018 a strategic traffic planning study commenced to address traffic safety, connectivity and liveability issues in Hahndorf. Access and efficiency for heavy freight vehicles travelling to surrounding areas was also considered. A key aim of the study was to investigate alternative vehicle options for traffic which doesn’t have a purpose in the main street (Mount Barker Road).

The Hahndorf Township Improvements and Access Upgrade Project includes:

  • a new interchange solution to access the freeway and remove unnecessary traffic from the main street of Hahndorf;
  • a set of traffic management measures for the main street of Hahndorf to improve safety and reduce congestion;
  • a Shared Use Path from the Hahndorf township to Verdun, providing the missing link of the Pioneer Women’s Trail;
  • an upgrade to the existing Mount Barker Interchange to reduce congestion and to improve connectivity, safety and access.

Previous Consultation

The Department would like to thank everyone who participated in the engagement activities held in 2021 on the proposed interchange options (Options 1-4). Following the end of the most recent consultation period in mid-December 2021, all feedback is currently being considered.

A final decision on the preferred interchange option has not been made.

Investigations and assessment of the broader Hahndorf Township Improvements and Access Upgrade Project are continuing.

Our aim is to ensure we make the right decision that meets the project objectives and reduces impacts as much as possible.

The consultation on the Mount Barker Interchange Upgrade concluded on Thursday, 10 March 2022. All feedback is currently being considered.

Community engagement is an important part of the planning, design, and delivery stages of the project.

We also encourage you to Subscribe for updates so we can keep you informed as the project progresses.
