Utilising surplus land at the completion of the Ovingham Level Crossing Removal Project, three pocket parks were announced to be developed as community open space.

Design and construction of these pocket parks is funded by the Ovingham Level Crossing Removal Project and will be delivered by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department).

After consultation with the City of Charles Sturt Council it was agreed that City of Charles Sturt will deliver the Drayton Street and Chief Street Pocket Parks.  The Department will deliver the Churchill Road Pocket Park.

Once the Churchill Road Pocket Park has been landscaped, it will be transferred to the City of Prospect to own and manage.

Pocket parks support a safe, connected and aesthetically pleasing transport network that can enhance lifestyle and connectivity within the community. These pocket parks will create new shared open space and provide a place for the community connect.

Park establishment works and landscaping are expected to commence by the end of 2023. The pocket park will be delivered mid-2024 (weather permitting).

Key considerations in development of Churchill Road Pocket Park design include using low maintenance landscaping and tree species, as well as providing seating, open green space and maximising the amount of flat, useable space available.

The amount of usable open space is being maximised by re-shaping the site levels as much as possible. This will allow for potential further enhancements to the open space in the future, as determined by the City of Prospect.

DIT will deliver:

  • an irrigated lawn area;
  • tree planting in line with the planting palate and concept images;
  • seating adjacent to the existing, centrally located tree; and
  • terraced reshaping of the site to maximise flat space.

The pocket park will then be handed over to City of Prospect.

The development of Churchill Road Pocket Park has been planned to avoid the need to impact significant vegetation.

Vegetation will be planted in Autumn, which is optimal planting season.

A watering system will be installed as part of the park infrastructure.  Vegetation will be planted and maintained by DIT for an agreed period of time with council, after which it will be handed over to the City of Prospect Council for ongoing care and maintenance.

Access to the Churchill Road pocket park will be from Churchill Road, just north of the intersection with Torrens Road / just south of Avenue Road.

Yes, CPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) principles will be incorporated into the design of Churchill Road Pocket Park.
