Benefits of the Adelaide to Crafers Project

The Adelaide Crafers project is part of Transport SA’s commitment to provide the transport infrastructure towards the support of social and economic advancement for all South Australians.

Benefits for people who use the road

  • improved travel times
  • reduced fuel costs
  • increased safety and reduced accident costs.

The new alignment has cut two kilometres and 5 to 10 minutes from the daily drive to Adelaide for about 10,000 residents of the Adelaide Hills and beyond, and bypassed the dangerous Devils Elbow accident black spot.

By 2006, annual road user benefits are estimated at $36 million with approximately $11 million of benefits accruing to local businesses and residents each year. Benefits also accrue to freight and commercial vehicle operators.

Economic benefits to South Australia

Expenditure on construction of the project delivered significant economic benefits to the South Australian community.

Employment from construction was 1300 to 1500 job years over the life of the project.

Household incomes have been estimated to increase by $31-35 million arising from

  • direct employment on the construction site
  • flow-on effect of increased consumption
  • purchase of inputs for the project.
