Apply for housing
Find out what is included with Government Employee Housing (GEH) and what you need to know before you apply.
Benefits of GEH
GEH is to help government employees get housing near regional employment locations. Benefits of GEH include:
- subsidised rent
- payment of rent via payroll deductions
- no need to pay a tenancy bond
- responsive maintenance service
- periodic tenancy agreement.
About GEH
The range of housing is diverse and mostly includes older houses. However, many have been renovated.
GEH is not a choice-based program. To get subsidised rent, you must accept the house allocated to you. If you choose to decline the allocated house, you will not get the rental subsidy.
Your employing agency is responsible for determining the eligibility of subsidised housing.

Before you apply
When you apply, give as much relevant information as possible. This will help GEH allocate suitable housing.
Apply as early as possible to help us find housing before your start date. We aim to let you know 14 to 21 days before your requested occupancy date.
We will contact you when an allocation has been made or let you know if we can’t provide housing by your requested date. If this happens, contact your employing agency to negotiate other arrangements.
Rent charges are deducted via payroll deduction. You may receive an invoice for water use costs and other charges deemed payable. The charges must be paid by the due date, otherwise they will be deducted via payroll in addition to the rent.
If approved, you will be responsible for:
- meeting all the conditions of the Residential Tenancy Agreement
- connecting all utilities, except for water
- arranging and paying for gas bottles refills in houses with bottled gas. GEH pays the annual service charge.
Tenant rents are paid fortnightly in arrears via payroll deduction and are not negotiable. The first payment may take up to 4 weeks.
