Works underway to restore abandoned Alberton Station building

Saturday, 12 July 2025
A timeline has been announced for a historic railway station building to be reopened for community usage ahead of its 170th birthday, with work now underway in Alberton.
The more than $1.4 million upgrade will see interior works completed by the end of this year and external restoration finished by mid-2026 on the Alberton Station building, which has sat abandoned since 2019 due to age and termite related damage.
Work has now begun to renovate the heritage listed structure, including the installation of new flooring and windows, and the restoration of the external façade of the building.
Ageing electrical systems will be replaced, and a new accessible bathroom constructed, ensuring the building can continue to service the community for generations to come.
The Alberton Station, which services the Outer Harbour line, was built in 1856, and is Australia’s oldest surviving station building at an operational railway station. It was named a State Heritage Place in 1981.
