Mallee Highway Safety Upgrades

We are delivering critical road safety upgrades and improvements on the Mallee Highway between Tailem Bend and Geranium. These works are jointly funded by the Australian (50%) and South Australian (50%) governments as part of the $168 million Road Safety Program.

Latest News

We are upgrading the Mallee Highway from Tailem Bend to Geranium, to improve long term safety and efficiency for all road users. Works on these upgrades will commence from Tuesday 2 April 2024. For more information please view for our latest works update.

Project Background

Extending approximately 70km, this section of Mallee Highway passes through the townships of Sherlock, Peake, Jabuk and Geranium. The Mallee Highway is a key transport link between Adelaide, Melbourne and the Murraylands agricultural region.

Between 2018 and 2022 nearly half of all crashes on the Mallee Highway were on curved sections of the road. Upgrades will improve safety, freight efficiency and support regional economic growth.

The upgrades will include road resealing, curve widening, shoulder sealing, installation of safety barriers, installation of Audio Tactile Line Marking (ATLM) and some vegetation management
