About the project
We are undertaking improvements to the Eyre Highway between Port Augusta and the Western Australian border.
These works are funded by the Australian and South Australian governments. This project will provide investment in regional road projects and infrastructure upgrades to improve road safety, as well as help build regional communities and create jobs.
Upgrade activities will include construction of new overtaking lanes, new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas, junction upgrades and safety measures such as audio tactile line marking.
The project also includes works adjacent the Kimba township.
As part of this program we are proposing to realign the Eyre Highway and upgrade four road junctions at Kimba. This would allow for uninterrupted, continuous movements through the township, improving safety and efficiency for all roads users, including freight and local residents.
The project would also include the construction of a new heavy vehicle rest area which will increase freight productivity while also supporting compliance with the National Heavy Vehicle Fatigue Laws through the provision of regular, suitable rest areas.
Other works would include the construction of a new pedestrian refuge, removal of the existing level crossing, new and upgraded LED road lighting, road pavement construction, asphalt re-surfacing, and new drainage.
The Kimba Level Crossing Upgrade project is on hold pending the outcome of a planning study into an optimal and viable export supply chain solution for Eyre Peninsula. The study will include a Business Case for supply chain development on Eyre Peninsula, that is expected to be finalised by late 2025.
Once completed, any future works to the Eyre Highway in Kimba will be subject to the availability of funding.
