About the project

We are upgrading the Barrier Highway between Cockburn and Burra. These upgrades will improve safety and freight efficiency and support regional economic growth.

Extending approximately 305km, this section of Barrier Highway passes through the townships of Olary, Yunta, Terowie, Hallett and Mount Bryan.

What's happening

Barrier Highway Rest Areas

The existing heavy vehicle rest area at Bindarrah will be upgraded and we will also begin construction of a new rest area at Winnininnie.

This project will be funded under the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Initiative with works commencing in 2026.

Barrier Highway Culvert Upgrades

Upgrades to several of the Barrier Highways major culverts will commence in 2026, to provide a wider road width for heavy vehicles.

This project will be funded under the Barrier Highway Upgrades Program.


Barrier Highway intersection upgrades

The Barrier Highway’s intersections with Main Street and Whyte Road, in Yunta and Whyte Yarcowie, respectively, have been upgraded to enable future provision for use by Performance Based Standards Level 3B heavy vehicles (up to 42-metre-long double road trains).

These projects were funded under the Barrier Highway Corridor Upgrades Program .

Work began in Yunta in November 2025 and work in Whyte Yarcowie commenced in December 2025 with completion in March 2026.
