Remote Areas Consultative Group (RACG)
Overview
The RACG comprises of transport, heavy vehicle industry and road agency representatives from Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, the National Transport Commission, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, the National Road Transport Association and the Australian Road Research Board.
The group was established in 2004 to provide a forum for matters affecting operations and transport in remote areas and has helped shape national processes, and legislation, such as the implementation of Fatigue Accreditation and Performance Based Standards.
The purpose of the RACG is to provide a forum for members to focus on remote area operations and cross border issues with a view to:
- improve the efficiency and productivity of transport in remote areas;
- maximise safety and environmental outcomes; and
- advise the Infrastructure and Transport Senior Officials’ Committee (ITSOC) and the Infrastructure and Transport Ministers’ Meeting (ITMM) (through ITSOC), on priority reforms for remote areas.
The RACG meets bi-annually. The host state/territory, rotates every two years between the key government transport/infrastructure agencies of the RACG jurisdictions.
South Australia, is the host state for 2019 – 2020, with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, having held 4 meetings to date. An extra (5th) meeting to counter the constraints imposed by COVID 19 restrictions will be held in November 2020.
Western Australia will be the host state for 2021 – 2022.
