Cape Jervis and Kangaroo Island Ports Upgrade

Kangaroo Island (KI) and the Fleurieu Peninsula are key destinations for visitors and tourism. They also include important freight and transport routes for South Australian produce (dairy, livestock, and wine) and tourism.

To support economic growth in these regions, and deliver improved essential transport services, we are undertaking a number of key infrastructure upgrades and planning activities across the Cape Jervis area and on KI. The infrastructure upgrade projects include a South Australian Government commitment of $73 million to deliver key safety and efficiency improvements to the ports at both Cape Jervis and Penneshaw. This project is expected to support approximately 135 full-time equivalent jobs per annum, over the construction period.

About the project

We are upgrading the Penneshaw and Cape Jervis ports, increasing the facilities lifespan and supporting continued ferry services between Kangaroo Island and the mainland. This project is funded by the South Australian Government.

Effective, safe and reliable port infrastructure at Penneshaw and Cape Jervis is critical to Kangaroo Island's economic success. The berthing and mooring structures at Cape Jervis and Penneshaw ports form part of the essential link between Kangaroo Island and the mainland for cars, freight and passengers and will be upgraded as part of the project.

This upgrade will improve safety and access for pedestrians, vehicles and the freight sector. It will support sustainable economic growth for the region.

When complete, the upgraded ports will feature new, fit-for-purpose facilities including improved berthing areas, additional navigational equipment and enhanced passenger amenities. It will facilitate more ferry services with faster turnaround times and improve safety for the new vessels and passengers, particularly during adverse weather and storms.

We understand how important the ferry service is for residents, tourists and freight. Access to ferry services during construction will be maintained.

Penneshaw investigation works

As part of the Penneshaw Port Upgrade, we are investigating possible options that will facilitate continued access for Cruise Ship tenders throughout construction of the new port infrastructure.

One option under consideration is the use of Christmas Cove. As part of these preliminary investigations, survey works are being undertaken in the area and will not impact access to the carpark, boat ramp or marina.

These are preliminary investigations only and no decisions have been made. Once we have more information, we will share this with you for feedback to inform planning.
