Adelaide Road, Mount Barker Roundabout Upgrade

Latest News

April 2024

The Department has engaged a design consultant to undertake planning and design.

Preliminary site investigations will be undertaken during the upcoming school holidays.

A report summarising the feedback received during early consultation, as well as the proposed concept design, will be provided to the community in the second half of this year.

About the project

The South Australian Government has committed $40 million as part of the 2023-2024 State Budget to upgrade the roundabout located at the intersection of Adelaide Road, Alexandrina Road, Wellington Road, and Flaxley Road in Mount Barker. This has been identified as a priority upgrade within the Mount Barker Infrastructure Deed, which will support nearby residential developments occurring within the Mount Barker Urban Growth Area and the broader Mount Barker area.

Traffic volumes on these roads and the associated delays are expected to increase significantly as a result of development occurring throughout the Mount Barker Urban Growth Area, particularly during the peak periods.

The upgrade will include the provision of additional lanes, shared use paths and road lighting improvements that will cater for the increase in traffic.

The upgrade will ensure safe and efficient access for all road users.

Background

The roundabout at the intersection of Adelaide Road, Alexandrina Road, Wellington Road, and Flaxley Road in Mount Barker is currently a dual lane roundabout with single lane approaches on some legs.

Adelaide Road currently carries approximately 25,900 vehicles per day. Wellington Road currently carries approximately 14,900 vehicles per day. Flaxley Road carries approximately 13,900 vehicles per day and Alexandrina Road carries approximately 7,800 vehicles per day.

By 2041 it is projected that the peak traffic volumes on the arterial road legs will increase as follows:

  • Adelaide Road: 26% in the morning and 59% in the afternoon peak;
  • Wellington Road: 56% in the morning and 33% in the afternoon;
  • Flaxley Road: 52% in the morning and 45% in the afternoon.

During the 2018 to 2022 period, seven crashes were recorded at this location. Of these crashes, five were casualty crashes including one serious casualty.

The intersection upgrade will deliver enhanced traffic capacity to cater for this increased demand and complement other infrastructure upgrades being undertaken in the area.

Community engagement

Insights from the local community and key stakeholders will play a key role in informing the concept design for the upgrade at the intersection of Adelaide Road, Alexandrina Road, Wellington Road, and Flaxley Road in Mount Barker.

Thank you to all members of the community who took the time to provide feedback at our engagement sessions in October 2023.
