Mike Turtur Bikeway Upgrade

The South Australian Government made an election commitment to put the Mike Turtur Bikeway Upgrade on hold until further consultation was undertaken to determine the next steps.

This commitment was made in response to a high level of concern raised by locals about the potential impact to trees and Forestville Reserve.

In May 2022, a Community Reference Group (CRG) was established to hear the views of the local community and key user groups. Members represented local residents, reserve users, Unley Swimming Centre users, pedestrians and cyclists. A number of members were also Goodwood Railway Station users. The City of Unley and Unley Bicycle User Group (UBUG) were also represented. Read the CRG Report.

During the five CRG meetings and site walks held between May and August 2022, several alternative options for both an overpass and underpass were raised and considered by the CRG.

Through this process there was no clear preferred option amongst members. It was however made clear that some level of change to improve local access would be beneficial.

Thank you to all community members who participated in this process, along with the broader public who contacted us and the PTP Alliance to express their views on the project.

We are committed to working with the community to improve connectivity and safety for all users of the Goodwood Station area, while minimising local impacts in Forestville Reserve.

What's next

To improve the safety and amenity of connections around Goodwood Station, with minimal impacts on the Forestville Reserve, we will make some local improvements to existing infrastructure.

Planned local upgrades

  • widening the two archways under the tramline to improve the safety of the shared use paths on both the eastern and western sides of the rail line. This will increase the width of the archways to approximately 5.5m on each side enabling safer movements for cyclists and pedestrians on a 4m wide shared path.
  • refreshing the existing subway and ramps to improve safety and amenity, including a lighting upgrade, installing safety mirrors, CCTV installation, drainage improvements, new non-slip surface and re-painting.

Upcoming Mike Turtur Bikeway improvements include:

  • An elevated Mike Turtur Bikeway over two arterial roads (Marion and Cross) is a key feature of the Marion ANZAC Cross Road Project. See website for details.
  • Consideration of a grade separation of the Mike Turtur Bikeway at Morphett Road, Morphettville is part of the Morphett Road Level Crossing Removal Planning Study. See website for details.

Community engagement

Community engagement is an important part of the project. Engagement with key stakeholders and the community will continue to be important as these local upgrades are delivered.

More information about the planned local upgrades, including construction timelines, will be shared once available.
