Stuart Highway Rest Areas Project
Fast facts

Location
Multiple locations along the Stuart Highway.

Funding
Jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments.
About the project
Extending approximately 2700 kms between Port Augusta and Darwin, the Stuart Highway is an important arterial road for freight and tourism. It provides access to major regional centres within South Australia and is the primary link between Adelaide and Darwin.
The new and upgraded rest areas will improve safety as they give more opportunities for heavy vehicle operators to safely stop and rest.
What's happening
We are upgrading an existing rest area at Arcoona, along the Stuart Highway and delivering a new heavy vehicle rest area at Pimba along the Olympic Dam Highway. These rest areas are jointly funded by the Australian (50%) and South Australian (50%) governments under the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Initiative.
Major work to construct a new heavy vehicle rest area at Pimba will commence from Sunday 14 June 2026.
In order to safely undertake these works, the heavy vehicle pull-off area currently used for parking by heavy vehicles, adjacent Spuds Roadhouse will be temporarily closed from Sunday 14 June 2026 until early August 2026, weather permitting.
More information can be found by viewing the latest works notice here.
Completed works
These works were completed in April 2025 and are open to all road users:
- South-west of Lake Hart at Wirraminna – major construction of a new rest area, new shelters, tables and bench seating installed.
- Bakers Well, south of Glendambo – upgrade to existing rest area, with new tables and bench seating.
