Message from the Chief Executive
Port Wakefield Overpass taking shape
While COVID restrictions are inevitably affecting some project schedules, I’m pleased to see the Port Wakefield Overpass and Highway Duplication team has been able to reach important milestones over the past two months.
June saw the pouring of the centre pier for the new overpass, followed by installation of the bridge beams last month. It’s good to see the PW2PA Alliance pushing forward on a number of major projects between Port Wakefield and Port Augusta as well as on the Eyre Peninsula.
The green team
Our Rail Care volunteers took advantage of National Tree Day last Sunday, 1 August, with 150 native trees planted across 10 sites along the train and tram network.
This example of Rail Care’s Greening and Bio-diversity initiative, collaborating with Planet Ark, adds greatly to the general amenity of train stations and tram stops for the benefit of our community.
We all appreciate the great work done by our Rail Care Volunteers. As Kilkenny volunteer Brenton noted, “Watching our station grow and change is fantastic. It’s become something locals really enjoy and are proud of.”

All systems go for Tap and Pay
Our customers’ public transport experience is set to become more convenient next year, when we take the next steps in rolling-out the option for contactless payment with a Visa or Mastercard. Initially trialled on trams, this tap and pay option will be extended to buses across the network from mid-2022.
Tap and Pay provides convenience for a range of customers, including those who may not have a metroCARD, or have been caught short on recharging it. This was clearly reflected in the trial on trams, where Tap and Pay usage data showed this form of payment almost doubled the purchase of single-trip MetroTickets.
Congratulations to the SAPTA team for their work on the tap-and-pay initiative, which helps to make public transport easier and more accessible to all South Australians.
Friday Flashback
Today’s Friday Flashback shows a level crossing on the tram line back in 1950. It is believed to be at Park Terrace (now Greenhill Road) and appears to be part roundabout and part very basic level crossing. It’s good to know we’ve come a long way.
