Northern Connector

A key milestone for the Northern Connector Project was achieved this week with the opening of the Waterloo Corner Interchange overpass to traffic, delivering a major road safety boost for the St Kilda area.

The newly opened overpass takes traffic from Waterloo Corner and Port Wakefield Roads over the Northern Connector, providing safer, signalised access to and from St Kilda and surrounding areas. With the opening of the overpass, St Kilda Road was permanently closed to through-traffic from Port Wakefield Road yesterday.

A significant amount of local materials were used in the construction of the overpass bridge, employing northern Adelaide residents and companies.

Award contender

It’s exciting to see the Department's staff member Arna Smith in the running for the University of Adelaide STEM Award category in the Seven News Young Achiever Awards.

Arna, from Procurement and Contracting, is one of three finalists in the award. As part of her submission, she described her contribution to STEM and civil engineering through her work in assisting a remote community in Tanna, Vanuatu, delivering a diverse range of road, rail, and public transport projects for the South Australia government, and her dedication to the Department’s Youth Connect initiative.

We wish Arna all the best in the awards.

Close shave

Well done to the team from Building Services, who we mentioned a few weeks ago, for losing or colouring their locks for the World’s Greatest Shave recently.

So far they have raised $1565.

Freeway changes

The Department's staff have been working hard to help improve safety on the busy South Eastern Freeway, with rules on the freeway set to change from 1 May.

Increased penalties will apply to drivers of all heavy vehicles and buses on the down track of the South Eastern Freeway.This applies to owners and operators of trucks with a Gross Vehicle Mass of more than 4.5 tonnes and buses built to carry more than 12 adults including the driver.

This is important work that may help save lives and the team involved should be proud of their efforts.

Great progress

Recent aerial shots of work at the Darlington Upgrade project again reveal not only the enormity of the work but also how quickly things are progressing towards an expected completion later this year.

Road users are already reaping the benefits of completed sections and will enjoy shorter and more fluid travel when this important part of the North-South Corridor is finished.

Graffiti gone

Our teams continue to do a great job in addressing graffiti, as our public campaign to combat the mindless menace continues.

Yesterday when a local member of parliament contacted our office to report some graffiti at Mitcham station our staff were, as always,  quick to respond.

As the photos below show, the graffiti was in a difficult spot but some rapid work saw the unsightly marks disappear within a few hours.

River safety

Well done to our maritime team on joining with the Department of Environment and Water to help facilitate important changes to improve safety for all users and marine life in the Barker Inlet and North Arm of the Port Adelaide River.

From 29 April, a 7 knot speed limit will be extended to these areas.

Friday Flashback

Today’s Friday Flashback shows Adelaide Oval as it appeared in 1902. The view looks south-west from the Cathedral.
