Marine message

Our Marine Safety team joined with Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers in Rundle Mall to promote boating safety this week.

This is another example of a successful partnership helping us to deliver a message that may well save lives.

As you can see from the photo below, correct understanding of lifejacket legislation and use was a key part of the conversations with passersby.

The outing also gave the team the opportunity to invite people to take part in the Boating Safety Survey, which will help inform how we move forward in this area in the future.

White Ribbon breakfast

Once again it was pleasing to see DPTI well represented at the recent White Ribbon breakfast, with members of the Domestic and Family Violence Community of Practice joining six other DPTI staff at the event.

An interactive panel from across AFL, AFLW, NRL and soccer was featured at the breakfast, promoting the positive role we can play in fostering respect and gender equality across our sporting cultures.

The newest member to the Domestic and Family Violence Community of Practice, Inez Grimaldi, shared her main take from the event, which was “to do something every day that fosters positive change”. That’s something we can all take on board.

AccessAbility Day

It was a privilege for us to host University of Adelaide Science Graduate James D’Andrea at DPTI for AccessAbility Day on 25 November.

James has majored in Ecology and Spatial Sciences and has a passion for maps, so was paired with State Addressing Team Coordinator Mark Morse, where he applied his skills to assist with the diagrams for proclaiming the Lucky Bay Harbor in legislation as part of the $130 million dollar grain port development on Eyre Peninsula.

Both James and Mark benefited from the day and share their stories in our intranet news item.

Family line

Last week we mentioned some of the impressive artwork that has been developed on DPTI assets along the rail corridor, including a partnership for delivery of artwork by students from Adelaide High School, which this year marked its 10th year of operation.

Each year students are given a theme to work with and this year the focus was Reconciliation.

There was also a special family link to mark the occasion, with Lewis Lovegrove, from Rail’s Civil Team, helping install the murals, including one designed and painted by his son Lewis Jnr, working with his student group.

Lewis Jnr also gave his first acknowledgement of country at a special launch of the artwork, where DPTI Director of Aboriginal Engagement and Inclusion Khatija Thomas gave a heartfelt speech to students about Reconciliation, closing the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians and working together to overcome past division and inequality, and the importance of their roles as the future of Reconciliation.

The artworks can be viewed from all trains passing through the Adelaide Rail Yard or from a number of vantage courtyard plaza points at NRAH and SAHMRI buildings on North Terrace.

Home by a whisker

This weekend marks a milestone for a number of DPTI staff, who are about to get reacquainted with their razors as Movember comes to an end.

Congratulations to the many people across the department who have grown a mo, supported those who were growing one or who have taken part in special Movember events to shine a light on men’s health.

Friday Flashback

Today’s Friday Flashback shows Wallaroo jetty with a number of ships alongside, in 1933.

A very wide wooden jetty with a large number of people walking along it. They are smartly dressed in old-style suite for the men and mostly frock for the women, many of whom are carrying parasoles. There are ships on either side of the jetty.
