Safety Awards
The 2019 DPTI Safety Awards were held this week and it was impressive to see a room full of people celebrating the great initiatives delivered over the past 12 months.
In each case we saw examples of people identifying a potential safety problem then taking ownership and following up.
The winner of the Best Solution of a WHS Risk award was Andrew Nobbs, for working with others to help deliver a safer cable changing winch and reel stands for the Morgan ferry.
The Best Individual WHS Achievement award went to Daniel White for improving WHS measures for conduct of bridge maintenance repair work.
The Best Health and Wellbeing Program had shared winners – the DPTI Made Available Trade Mental Health Initiative and the ODASA Wellbeing Program.
The inaugural Chief Executive’s Award went to Chris Carr for his role in driving the development and implementation of DPTI - Minimum Construction Safety Expectations.
Everyone who was nominated has done an outstanding job and I applaud them all.

Future link
DPTI continues to take on its important responsibilities in building a better future, and this week our Flinders Link Project team spent a day with a group of Flinders University engineering students, providing an opportunity for them to learn more about their field of study.
Students saw the various stages of construction and heard first-hand from project engineers about everyday design and construction challenges and opportunities.
Team members were happy to share their time and give students valuable experience and insight into the realities of being an engineer on a major project.

Service promotion
Our Adelaide Metro and SA Transport Subsidy Scheme teams recently participated in the Disability, Aging & Lifestyle Exhibition hosted by the Catalyst Foundation, Ageing SA and Seniors Information Services.
This was an excellent opportunity to promote public transport services to South Australians who are often regular and frequent users of the network.
Visitors were keen to learn about the Adelaide Metro online apps and how to access seniors travel information, transport assistance information and transport concession information.
Well done to the teams that ensured another successful year at the event.

Team fundraiser
Well done to the Building Projects team for co-ordinating a fundraising drive in support of the not-for-profit Motor Neurone Disease Association of South Australia recently.
The team dug deep during their month-long fundraising drive, and raised $874.15 for MND SA.
MND SA is the first point of contact for anyone in South Australia following a diagnosis of MND, and helps to reduce the impact of MND for those diagnosed and their families and carers, by providing the best possible care and support services statewide.
A great effort by everyone involved.
Safety symposium
It’s important to have DPTI staff involved in safety initiatives, especially during National Safe Work Month.
The Australian Institute of Health and Safety held its annual Safety Symposium last week and DPTI was well represented, with 10 staff at the event.
Some great speakers and current-issue presentations included SafeWork SA CEO Martyn Campbell speaking about the Regulator’s Focus on WHS and dust related diseases such as Silicosis, Luke Holland Sparke Elmore, highlighting WHS in Contract Management, and Jeremy Woolley, Director of CASR, presenting Lessons on Road Safety.
Justin Tulloch, Geoff Osborne, Robby Delben, Belinda King (SA Branch secretary), Cameron Billinghurst, Joy Quigley, Chris Carr and John Callea at the symposium. Steve Robertson attended but was not in the photo.
