Life-saving advice

Port Lincoln based Marine Safety Officer Hank Swalue saw the value of his work first-hand last week, and three people were lucky enough to survive to say thanks.

While conducting vessel inspections at the Whyalla boat ramp, Hank spoke to a group of people heading out in a small tinny and educated them on the new lifejacket regulations.

The vessel then ventured out with all three occupants wearing appropriate lifejackets, but was swamped by a wave and capsized a short time later.

All occupants swam to shore and were thankful for Hank’s earlier actions. Well done, Hank.

On the Right Track

It was great to see our On the Right Track Remote team being recognised as one of four team finalists for a Premier’s Excellence Award for 2018.

These awards recognise those who have delivered exceptional outcomes for South Australians by delivering exemplary services, putting South Australians at the centre of their work and consistently demonstrating the Public Sector Values.

On the Right Track Remote has made a significant difference to the lives and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and communities in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) and Maralinga Tjarutja (MT) Lands.

This team applied user-centred design and consulted extensively within the community on a creative new road safety initiative. Their efforts have seen driver licensing rates significantly increased for Aboriginal people in remote communities, and safer driving behaviours such as the use of child being adopted.

Well done family!

Safety response

A special mention today for Safety Management Officer Rob Stirling, who responded to a recent safety issue in the most professional of manners.

The response was prompt and diligent and Rob thought beyond the immediate incident to identify actions that we should now take to minimise the risk of recurrence of this type of incident, with the review of technical data sheets, and the issue of a safety alert.

This is a great example of the high standards in safety we set at DPTI.

Education incentive

DPTI is continuing to deliver incentives to young Indigenous school students through the rollout of laptops to encourage academic participation.

As part of the Walpaara Anpa award, DPTI staff present laptops to Year 10 students in different regional settings.

This year 15 laptops will be handed out across the state, from Naracoorte in the South East to Port Lincoln in the West.

Customer service

It’s great to be able to report another example of great customer service, this time from a DPTI staff member helping a client with a difficult car registration transfer from interstate.

I received an email from the customer, who reported Service SA’s Jacob Leak went the extra mile to help, including contacting the Western Australia registration department, helping with forms and following up with a phone call to complete the issue.

This feedback is a reminder of the effect we can have in helping our customers at Service SA. Thanks to Jacob for giving star service to a person who I am confident he treated as he would any other customer.

Real-life lesson

Senior DPTI staff took part in a special training seminar yesterday to help them understand some of the accessibility issues a person with disability might face when navigating streets, buildings and public transport.

The session included a field trip with participants wearing vision-impairment glasses and one in a wheelchair, navigating their way under the guidance of partners along Grenfell St to King William St, onto a tram to Adelaide Railway Station, another one to the Art Gallery of South Australia then a walk back to Grenfell St.

Asset management

As part of DPTI’s customer service commitment to improve asset management planning and knowledge across government, the department facilitated an asset management training day last Monday.

The training brought 50 representatives from Health, Industry & Skills, TAFE, Environment, Recreation & Sport and our own staff together to attend the Institute of Asset Management Foundation Award Training delivered by the Asset Management Academy.

The success of the day reflects the increased awareness of the important role asset management planning plays in the delivery of community services and also demonstrated the effectiveness of collaboration across government to achieve common goals.

Body-worn cameras

DPTI is currently trialling the use of body-worn cameras, with Compliance Officers, Investigators, Driver Standards Officers and Maritime Safety Officers using them in their daily activities.

There are strict conditions around the use of the cameras, including notifying members of the public that their conversation is being recorded when talking to a DPTI Officer and the cameras themselves are clearly visible and labelled. It is expected that the body worn cameras will contribute to a safer working environment, generate efficiencies in the collection, storage and retention of evidence, and potentially lead to early resolution of complaints.

The trial is set to continue until early May, after which DPTI will complete an assessment on the performance of the cameras.
